The Cold Song

I wasn’t ready for the cold.

It feels different than it did.

I know what I’ve been told,

since I was a kid.

Wear mittens on your hands.

Don’t expose bare skin to wind.

And if it’s too cold to stand,

it’s time to go in.

The things I used to love,

they’ve grown up, too.

I took advantage of

the living parts of you.

Waking up with the sunrise

feels different than before.

Rubbing at these tired eyes,

they’re begging me for more.

I never wanted to sleep so bad.

I have dreams of long ago.

And if I can’t get out of bed,

what have I got to show?

The things I used to love,

they’ve grown up, too.

I took advantage of

the living parts of you.

And I’m so sorry.
